At church today while I was playing the piano in Primary, I realized how much I enjoy both playing the piano.
I have never considered myself very musically inclined. I don't have the radio or a cd playing all the time (not even in the car) and never know who's playing on the radio (except maybe Mica and Brad Paisley). I enjoy singing and reading the alto line but I don't have a strong voice by any means (unless it's in my vocal range--all of 6 notes!). I can read music but don't pay attention to the actual note names except peripherially (sp).
While I took piano lessons for 9 years (sightreading most of the time!) I don't think that I developed a great talent for it. I can play most Primary songs and am getting better at playing some hymns. I am a step-up from playing with just the right hand, but not much.
After saying all that, I realized today that I just love to play. It is something that really brings me happiness and joy. I feel the spirit when my hands are on the keys more than many other places you'd typically expect to feel uplifted. I'm so glad that we have so few pianists in our ward so that I can have this calling.
Even though I inherited my father's short, stubby fingers; fingers that shouldn't be good on the those eighty-eight black and white keys, I love playing the piano.
